SUMMARY:Boren Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This information session is open to all undergraduate and graduate students who are interested in learning languages and studying in world in world regions critical to U.S. interests including Africa\, Asia\, Eastern Europe\, Eurasia\, Latin America\, the Caribbean\, and the Middle East. (Canada\, Australia\, and New Zealand are excluded\, as well as countries in Western Europe.) In general\, successful candidates are interested in learning less commonly taught languages in countries that are significant to U.S. national security and are individuals committed to a career in the federal government. \nThis workshop\, hosted by the WSU Distinguished Scholarships Program\, features Kyle Cox\, Outreach and Recruitment Analyst for the Boren Awards.  Mr. Cox will be on hand to detail the benefits of the scholarship\, selection criteria\, and answer any questions you may have.

In 2021\, the Udall Foundation anticipates awarding 60 scholarships nationwide of up to $7\,000 each\, for sophomores and juniors in one of three distinct areas. \nStudents must be U.S. citizens and fall into one of these categories: \n\nA Native American or Alaska Native student who has demonstrated commitment to careers related to tribal public policy\, including fields related to tribal sovereignty\, tribal governance\, tribal law\, Native American education\, Native American justice\, natural resource management\, cultural preservation and revitalization\, Native American economic development\, and other areas affecting Native American communities.\nA Native American or Alaska Native student who has demonstrated commitment to careers related to Native health care\, including health care administration\, social work\, medicine\, dentistry\, counseling\, and research into health conditions affecting Native American communities\, and other related fields.\nA student with a demonstrated commitment to careers related to the environment\, including policy\, engineering\, science\, education\, urban planning and renewal\, business\, health\, justice\, economics\, and other related fields.

SUMMARY:Marshall Scholarship and The Application Process
DESCRIPTION:Join current WSU Marshall Scholar Kristian Gubsch and two other Marshall Scholars for a presentation on the award and the application process to be considered for it. \nThe Zoom meeting ID: 965 0357 3449\nPasscode: 086852 \nIn 2021\, the Marshall Foundation anticipates awarding 50 scholarships nationwide to support high-ability students from a variety of academic disciplines as they study at a United Kingdom university of their choice for up to three years. \nPresenters at this event include: \nGubsch\, a 2020 graduate from the Voiland College of Engineering and Architecture. He is WSU’s first-ever Marshall Scholar. He is pursing a one-year master’s program at the University of Sheffield in energy and environmental engineering. Prior to the Marshall\, he received two other nationally competitive awards (Hollings and Goldwater Scholarships). As an undergraduate\, he was also involved with the Harold Frank Engineering Entrepreneurship Institute\, a member of the Honors College\, served as a 209 delegate to the UN Climate Change Conference (COP 25) in Madrid\, and conducted research in two labs at WSU. \nKate Weber is a 2007 Marshall Scholar\, earned a Ph.D. in genetics from Cambridge University\, and has pursued a career in science policy. She is the Public Policy Lead for Quantum\, Robotics\, and Fundamental Research at Google and previously served as a AAAS Fellow and Division Chief for Chemicals\, Air Quality\, and Waste at the U.S. Department of State\, and as a Science Policy Fellow at the American Chemical Society. \nLieutenant Andrea Howard is among the first 100 women in the U.S. Navy’s nuclear submarine force\, where she serves aboard the USS Ohio (SSGN-726) in Bangor\, Wash. A 2015 Marshall Scholar\, she earned an MSc in Global Governance & Diplomacy (with Distinction) from the University of Oxford and an MA in Science & Security (with Distinction) from King’s College London. Named among the Atlantic Council’s 25 LGBTI Next Generation Leaders to Watch\, Howard is a trustee in the USNA Alumni Association Pacific Northwest Chapter\, a Defense Council member in the Seattle Chapter of the Truman National Security Project\, a host for CIMSEC’s “Sea Control” podcast\, and a recurring author for War on the Rocks and the U.S. Naval Institute’s Proceedings. \n
