In 2021, the Marshall Foundation anticipates awarding 50 scholarships nationwide to support high-ability students from a variety of academic disciplines as they study at a United Kingdom university of their choice for up to three years.
Presenters at this event include:
Gubsch, a 2020 graduate from the Voiland College of Engineering and Architecture. He is WSU’s first-ever Marshall Scholar. He is pursing a one-year master’s program at the University of Sheffield in energy and environmental engineering. Prior to the Marshall, he received two other nationally competitive awards (Hollings and Goldwater Scholarships). As an undergraduate, he was also involved with the Harold Frank Engineering Entrepreneurship Institute, a member of the Honors College, served as a 209 delegate to the UN Climate Change Conference (COP 25) in Madrid, and conducted research in two labs at WSU.
Kate Weber is a 2007 Marshall Scholar, earned a Ph.D. in genetics from Cambridge University, and has pursued a career in science policy. She is the Public Policy Lead for Quantum, Robotics, and Fundamental Research at Google and previously served as a AAAS Fellow and Division Chief for Chemicals, Air Quality, and Waste at the U.S. Department of State, and as a Science Policy Fellow at the American Chemical Society.
Lieutenant Andrea Howard is among the first 100 women in the U.S. Navy’s nuclear submarine force, where she serves aboard the USS Ohio (SSGN-726) in Bangor, Wash. A 2015 Marshall Scholar, she earned an MSc in Global Governance & Diplomacy (with Distinction) from the University of Oxford and an MA in Science & Security (with Distinction) from King’s College London. Named among the Atlantic Council’s 25 LGBTI Next Generation Leaders to Watch, Howard is a trustee in the USNA Alumni Association Pacific Northwest Chapter, a Defense Council member in the Seattle Chapter of the Truman National Security Project, a host for CIMSEC’s “Sea Control” podcast, and a recurring author for War on the Rocks and the U.S. Naval Institute’s Proceedings.
